Etsy Finds Decor: Haunted Mansion

Christine

This weekend's Get the Look: Decor is inspired by the eerie haunted house at the top of the hill. You know the one: overgrown with ivy, loose shutters rattling in the wind, rumored to be owned by a crazy old woman who murdered her family with an axe, and there's always a single light burning in the window.

Scary or not, I really love the history and memories an old house holds. My favorite home I've lived in was built in the late 1800s. During the renovating process I uncovered the home's many layers and hidden mementos left by previous occupants. I saved every photograph, newspaper and magazine clipping, each layer of wallpaper, forgotten letters, a pinch of soot, and even the teeth from a beloved pet found in a box in the basement, which were all later framed and displayed in the heart of the home.

Every old house is haunted by the memories of its past. Whether the previous occupants choose to show themselves or not, traces of life are not easily wiped away. Check out the Etsy Finds below for creative decorating ideas that will help you create the spookiest Halloween haunt or simply celebrate the history of your home.

Ghost House

In that vanished abode there far apart
On that disused and forgotten road
That has no dust-bath now for the toad.

Silence

by Edgar Allan Poe

There are some qualities — some incorporate things,
That have a double life, which thus is made
A type of that twin entity which springs
From matter and light, evinced in solid and shade.
There is a two-fold Silence — sea and shore —
Body and soul. One dwells in lonely places,
Newly with grass o'ergrown; some solemn graces,
Some human memories and tearful lore,
Render him terrorless: his name's "No More."
He is the corporate Silence: dread him not!...

The Ghost of a Flower

Anonymous

"You're what?" asked the common or garden spook
Of a stranger at midnight's hour.
And the shade replied with a graceful glide,
"Why, I'm the ghost of a flower."

"The ghost of a flower?" said the old-time spook;
"That's a brand-new one on me;
I never supposed a flower had a ghost,
Though I've seen the shade of a tree."

Because I could not stop for Death

by Emily Dickinson

Because I could not stop for Death –
He kindly stopped for me –
The Carriage held but just Ourselves –
And Immortality.

We slowly drove – He knew no haste
And I had put away
My labor and my leisure too,
For His Civility – ...

What a great collection of items....it had such an eerie feeling to it!!!!

Sept. 27, 2009 at 10:19 a.m. MarcellasExcess

Halloween is my favorite time! I live for the combo of fallen leaves crunching underfoot, cooler temps, scary movies on AMC and decor, that at any other time of year would make me look like an escaped metal patient...ahhhh spooky Halloween! Great picks here!!

Sept. 27, 2009 at 10:19 a.m. oldworldprimitives

Sept. 27, 2009 at 10:53 a.m. moonovermaize

Love it! I'm a bit obsessed with old houses after having lived in England. We lived in a small cottage built in the early 1800's, but what I dream of living in is an English thatched cottage dating back to the 16th century that includes a friendly spirit or two ;)

Sept. 27, 2009 at 10:55 a.m. ParadiseBodyShop

Oh man there is some freaky stuff here lol

Sept. 27, 2009 at 10:57 a.m. uncharted

Sept. 27, 2009 at 10:57 a.m. kclarkphotography

wonderfully atmospheric, great job

Sept. 27, 2009 at 10:58 a.m. vivikas

keep it creepy, I like it!

Sept. 27, 2009 at 10:58 a.m. magickalrealism

I think my favorite is that perfume bottle.

Even in the tiny house I grew up in, we found mementos of the occupants - a troll doll that had had its hair chopped off (it was bright blue) and a letter from someone's father that he wrote while serving in WWII.

Sept. 27, 2009 at 11:04 a.m. Beadymonkey

An article with spooky perfection! I always enjoy reading Storque, it inspires me and helps me to shop! I love the fact that, with vintage items, hand made goodies and just using every day finds; one can create a spooky atmosphere with out using a bunch of store bought blech. Bravo.... or should I say BOO!

Sept. 27, 2009 at 11:07 a.m. WildWomanJewelry

Love this! those photos are particularly spooky!

Sept. 27, 2009 at 11:14 a.m. firewoodfurniture

Sept. 27, 2009 at 11:32 a.m. lovelygifts

Interesting pieces. I remember seeing the glass door knobs in old homes.

Sept. 27, 2009 at 11:32 a.m. designsbyLANAIE

Believe it or not, this theme brought back childhood memories. No, my childhood was a great one, but as a child, like all children, there was a so-called haunted house in our neighbourhood. It was not until in my teens that we got up the nerve to go inside and were disappointed to see that it was only an old condemned house. I LOVE this collection.

Sept. 27, 2009 at 11:37 a.m. VeraVague

Looks like a stroll through my apartment....

Sept. 27, 2009 at 11:42 a.m. mythunderstood

nice and moody! Living in haunted houses is a way of life and they still talk back when they're dead.

Sept. 27, 2009 at 11:43 a.m. bobnstitch

Sept. 27, 2009 at 12:49 p.m. breadandroses2

Beautifully curated picks, Christine! Not creepy, just old stuff from another time & place that seems like another world now. Had a Mirroscope projector once. Quite a novelty. Every door in our home still has the same glass door knobs shown above. They're from from the 1930s, when our house was 'modernized'. I really love them.

Sept. 27, 2009 at 12:51 p.m. uknowuneedanother
