Growing up, my crafty mom always made sure that my brothers and I had costumes that won first place in every Halloween contest we entered. She was so good at giving a kid the most perfect five o'clock shadow that my grandparents didn't even recognize my little brother in his Rambo costume when he went trick or treating on their doorstep. I had so much fun playing dress up as a child, and have continued the tradition of the handmade costume into my adult years.

I love this! It brings back the good ol'days. All we had growning up were homemade costumes and didnt think too much of it. It made my brother, sister and I be uber creative. My favorite halloween year was when I was 13 and my brother and I dressed up as an old "really large" farmer and I was an old lady with knee socks. We used a lot of pillows that year and had a ton of fun.

Fantastic! I would have loved some of these costumes when I was little. My mom used to hand sew a lot of our stuff and they'd go into the dress up chest after Halloween. Every one of these picks is adorable. My kids had some seriously DIY handmade/upcycled costumes in the day. Made a similar lions mane hat from a cotton twill welder's cap with hand sewn yellow-orange Aunt Lydia's rug yarn hair. The clown suit w/ ruff was a combo of Salvation Army 50s fabric remnants in the most fun butterfly & abstract prints. Still have the costumes. Wish I had more of the great fabric!
