Lately I've been noticing an emerging trend that utilizes some very traditional dyeing techniques. Hand-dyed yarn and fabric are back in full swing and are being used to create everything from modern colorful dresses, t-shirts, skirts and leggings to pillows, table linens, bags and accessories. I'm especially fond of the one of a kind patterns and color combinations achieved by dyeing techniques such as batik, ikat, resist, fiber reactive, discharge, acid, natural plant dyes and shibori.
If you'd like to learn more about how to create your own natural dyes, check out this How-Tuesday video where Etsy Labs' instructor Kim Hall shares tips on creating your own plant-based dyes. It's fun to experiment and a really smart way to make last season's wardrobe look completely new.

I've always loved playing with dyed materials. I used to dye old white sheets, cut them into strips and create rugs with them.

Great picks! I love the leggins, journal, tape pouch and owl pouch. Here are some destash blanks for babies from a teammate's shop for people who would like to dye their own.

SO many gorgeous things here! And thank you, you totally helped me with a listing: ikat" is the term I was looking for to describe the print on a dress. :)

Awesome. I have also seen some items here on etsy that are dyed with coffee and tea and I always think...wow, they look so pretty and the "process" must smell so yummy!

Pretty stuff! Dyeing can be very fun... which is a good thing because I have 18 skeins of naked yarn waiting for me to get to work!

I don't think they mentioned shoes. I paint on dyeable shoes with my own technique for satin pumps and elegant designs.
Love this feature by the way.

I have a load of blank (plain white) clothes and accessories that are just right for adding your own touches of color...if you are looking for something white to make YOUR OWN with dye or paint or whatever, take a look!

I love all the hand dyed stuff. Natural dying is my favorite by far over the synthetic dyes.
AdobeOneKenobi
This is a very cool collection of stuff! I don't know much about it myself but I look at dyed stuff all the time on Etsy. That tie up there is totally sweet. This is one of my favorites: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?...
They're hand dyed silk faerie wings. I think she makes a couple of them but that one's my fav.

Perhaps the recognition of these dyeing methods seems trendy to those who are just now discovering it, but there's nothing at all new or "emerging" about these plant-based dyeing techniques. These disciplines which have been in active use by fiber artists not only worldwide but in our own country ever since I began my undergraduate studies in textiles, way back in the previous century. A small handful of us started selling our hand dyed fibers online nearly a decade ago on another "e" commerce site, and from just a handful of us it has now blossomed into an enormous cottage industry with a vast proliferation of home dyers taking it up as a trade. Such techniques as shibori, ikat (on loom warp dyeing) and batik (wax resist dyeing) have been present in textile studios non-stop through the years, and tie-dyeing has been the most common technique seen at street fairs and summer festivals since the 1960's. I certainly agree that those who may just be now noticing hand dyed yarn, fiber and fabric are in for a wonderful journey of discovery.

Can I just give you all a nudge at this seller, who not only dyes her own yarns, but grows the herbs too!

Thank you for this post, Christine! Well done.
I missed it yesterday because, on a whim, I decided to try out some fall color dyes on my new line of vintage lace embellished tshirts. Totally randomness & synchroncity/coincidence in the timing. Love it when stuff like this happens. And I haven't been paying any attention to 'dyed' handmade wares on Etsy or elsewhere, either. Shameless commercial plug: look for my hand dyed, vintage lace trimmed shirts, coming soon!
katasarayarns comments are all true & well taken. I'm not a young sprout and learned more advanced fiber dyeing techniques in my university weaving class in the early 70s. I dyed & embroidered my kids' church rummage sale baby shirts for thrift, fun and because white showed every stain. Yes, lots of us are familiar with many of these fiber techniques & possibly take it for granted.
There is nothing new under the sun, so it's said.
Most everything has some historical precedent, however obscure, i.e. our primitive computers were based on the technology used in Jacquard weaving looms invented the early 19th century. Who could have imagined back then? Amazing.
What's really important is passing on an awareness, appreciation and the practice of age-old traditional arts with each generation. It's refreshing, and encouraging, to see timeless techniques evolve using non-traditional materials & applications. Whether the 'new' iterations are marketed as trendy fashion, has an appeal to my particular aesthetic or otherwise is somewhat irrelevant.
These all would be dead arts & cultural relics if subsequent generations of artists and craftsmen did not attempt to stretch boundaries, develop their own aesthetic and broaden the audience to those who might never of their own accord discover the joys and intricacies of the fiber arts movement. You never know who will be inspired and what they might create.
My hand dyeing skills have been sitting on a shelf for too long and I'm grateful for the opportunity to dust them off with the plant-based dyeing video. It couldn't have come at a more perfect time! Thanks again, Etsy!

thanks for the feature in your lovely article! it was my birthday yesterday to boot, and finding lots of new hearts was such a treat! xo!

great to learn about new techniques. very interesting selection of items!

This was great, I almost forgot that it's fun to dye yourself! I love buying hand-dyed everything, but forgot how much I used to love the serendipity of hand-dying that I did as a teenager back in the day ('68-'70). My poor dad never had any of his big white t-shirts!

My hairdresser makes a plant based dye for eyelashes thats awesome. It's like having jet black mascara on thats lasts for about 8 weeks. I find it very sexy.
In the 60s, my brother was the "go to guy" for hand-dyed sheets and shirts. I remember watching him and being in awe. He grew up to be an amazing house painter, wall paper hanger, and even hand-paints wall paper. A rare find indeed today!

I just noticed that my scarf was featuread here. Thanks a lot! Great idea for article and lovely picks!
