Handmade Kids: Wooden Toys and Classic Looks

I love children's items that withstand the test of time. A handmade quilt, a classic vintage storybook, sturdy wooden toy — these are a few of my favorite things. In fact, I have quite a few stored in my parents' attic waiting to spring to life again once I have kids!

In my opinion, kids dressed like little old-fashioned dolls is the way to go (at least until they're old enough to complain). In addition to toys and items for the nursery, you can find formal children's clothing for events like weddings and christenings. I'm keeping an eye out for antique kids' clothes too.

My inspiration? I had a vintage suitcase filled with my mother's dolls as a kid; they had intricate doll clothing that my great-grandmother had made. They're still somewhere in our attic...What's your favorite childhood item? Leave it in the comments below!

My favourite childhood item?
gosh! - when I was 2 it was my teddy (still with me),
then I had barbies, and barbie horses, and cindy horses and cindys, and little plastic farm and zoo animals (still with me)
I now have 2 barbie horses (again! - I love them!) and 3 'extra' for my two nieces when they come to visit and play.

Aw, my babies are getting big enough to have their own clothing opinions. And unfortunately, they seem to want to see more Hannah Montana and less vintage lace and smocking...

May 13, 2009 at 12:22 a.m. pogoshop

I had one of those early Barbies, the one with the black striped bathing suit. That meant that she could go swimming in the creek and camp in the lean-to that I built for her. Except for that suit and little plastic heels, the rest of her clothes and possessions were handmade, including her parachute. She was a rugged, and eventually ragged girl.

May 13, 2009 at 3:08 a.m. VintageJamie

cant buy things for my kiddo other than wooden these days.. it just seems to grow with the kid and grows old beautifully.. shipping however will not be fun as some of these seem to be quiet heavy..

May 13, 2009 at 8:02 a.m. fairiesnest

Dolls were always my favorites! My sis and I had a set of vintage Ginny dolls (with tons of clothes!) handed down from an aunt, that we adored...and as you can see, I have never stopped playing with dolls! :)

May 13, 2009 at 8:20 a.m. mythunderstood

You captured my childhood! Wooden toys and radio flyer wagons to boot! Great feature!

May 13, 2009 at 10:16 a.m. Vanessa

Yes, fairiesnest, Ginny dolls! I think those were the kind my mom had too.

May 13, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. breadandroses

The boat wagon is fantastic! Handmade doll clothes are the best. My mom made a couture quality lace sheath dress from scraps. Still have handed down Ginny dolls with the finest hand crocheted, puff sleeved dresses. All lovingly packed away, of course.

May 13, 2009 at 11:31 a.m. 4TheSparrowsNest

Favorite childhood item?? Thanks for asking, I always love a survey, lol! I'm only 25 so my favorite childhood item doesn't really have any "vintage" flair, but I loved my Grand Champions horse models...I had over sixty of them (it's what my hard-earned allowance went to.) I made them blankets and accessories and stables out of cardboard boxes...and then would spend hours creating elaborate soap operas for them to act out. :o)

May 13, 2009 at 11:40 a.m. Liyana

sweet... I love doll the most :D

May 13, 2009 at 11:48 a.m. OneEcoTree

Love the whale!!

May 13, 2009 at 11:53 a.m. bunnywithatoolbelt

My favorite toy was our basic building block set coupled with what we called the "People Box"--this was a cardboard box where all the tiny animals, cars, dollhouse foods and accessories, action figures and other things that potentially could get scattered all over the house, were kept. It opened so many possibilities up for my brother and me to build new environments!

May 13, 2009 at 11:55 a.m. PuzzleBoBuzzles

The whale makes such a wonderful, affordable gift. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

May 13, 2009 at 1:03 p.m. isewcute

I loved my paper dolls and my brothers tiny little building bricks,he had the only ones I've ever seen, I wish I knew what happened to them. Oh and I loved a bikini my mum made , very 70's orange and brown paisley , very funky.

May 13, 2009 at 5:07 p.m. KensingtonAve

Who wouldn't want to color, when a whale is holding your crayons for you?!

May 13, 2009 at 7:19 p.m. StudioCherie

I had a red gingham dress with a black velvet choo choo train going across the skirt. I was 4. Later, it was my PJ doll (she was Barbie's cooler sister) with rose colored glasses.

May 13, 2009 at 9:23 p.m. ricracandbuttons

oh so fun!

May 14, 2009 at 12:04 a.m. Hamncheezr

My favorite toy until i was 6 was a "heart doll baby" my Mom made me. It was a preprinted heart shaped panel that made a pillow with arms and legs! My daughter has a little lady doll i made by hand while pregnant. It has a muslin body, little cotton print dress and handkerchief headpiece. And an adorable nine patch quilt attached to her left hand. I hope she will treasure it.

Enjoyed the article! Barbie & Ken, a puppy dog with eyes that opened/closed, paper dolls, jacks, board games...these are a few of my favorite memories of toys that we had growing up! I, too,
had the best-dressed Barbie because of the hand made clothes my aunt gave me! What fun! (I'm old enough to remember when we used our imaginations at play!)
