If you've seen a resurgence of gnomes, toadstools, and miniature cottages where fairy tales of the tiny variety might occur, you're not imagining things. Today's trend is inspired by the world as illustrated in Grimm's Fairy Tales, full of Bavarian-inspired imagery and little men that live inside red and white spotted mushrooms. Bring out the cuckoo clocks and wear your finest dirndl, as this story is about to get interesting!

I love the cuckoo clock ties and ring! I still have my grandmother's cuckoo clock that she bought in Germany years ago...it might be time to unpack it and wind it up!

It's funny that people love to link things to Grimms tales that are not mentioned there with even one word. Maybe it's like that in Disney's version, but not in the original. :)

i love gnomes. we made them in elementary and i got to make one with a blue hat because i'm jewish! (blue star of david, that kind of thing) i loved it!

Oh my goodness, what incredible fortuitous timing. I've just completed a mini book called "No one knows me like my Gnome". It was inspired by my fascination with Gnomes. Thanks for sharing this fun article and highlighting these talented artists. Oh, and please do look for my Gothic fable about an obsessive Gnome who stalks a woman over the course of a year. Yes, it's odd and a bit creepy, but also sweet and charming. Think Tim Burton meets Edger Allen Poe.

I remember making the red and white mushrooms out of dough and gluing them on moss and driftwood with my mother and sister in the '70's. Brings back memories :)
