Low Priced Item and VERY High Priced Shipping - Is this allowed?

I was looking at some jewelry items on Etsy a few minutes ago and a necklace priced at $.40 and shipping was $9 from the US to the US. That seems outrageous!! I'm sure that is just a way to get around paying Etsy fees and it doesn't seem like it should be allowed. Any thoughts??

I guess I'm wondering if something like this should be reported??

Not good. I have a policy that my shipping prices reflect the real cost of postage and packaging. I put a price for shipping then if it costs less I will refund the difference.

It sounds like fee avoidance to me...etsy doesn't charge a fee on shipping charges.

I've reported many shops for this practice. It's interesting to put in a random search term, say, "necklace," and then sort by lowest price first. Along with many other non-allowed listings (items not for sale, color charts, promos for off-site selling, etc), you'll find lots of items for 20 cents with ridiculously high shipping. It's fee avoidance and not allowed.

I do the same as Allison. I refund if all of the price of shipping is not used. If the customer is a repeat I have been known to drop shipping charges.

Maybe you could message the seller and ask if they're open to shipping flat rate or something? If you actually want the item you never know till you ask.

That is definitely fee avoidence. No way to make any OTHER sense out of such a business practice. Some people just don't have any ethics and I doubt they'll last long. If somebody hasn't already reported them, I'm sure it will happen eventually. People who run their shops that way help give those of us with a passion for what we do a bad name.

I don't understand why the community has to report suspected fee avoidance. It would be so simple for Etsy's staff to generate lists from time to time of shops which have a certain percentage of listings with prices much lower than the domestic shipping cost. If Etsy doesn't care enough to monitor something that requires no community expertise, I say let sellers avoid whatever fees they can. I won't report them!
