I wanted to see what everyone's thoughts were on it being mandatory to have your location show up under your profile pic on your shop. I've noticed that not all sellers have that area filled out and if they don't mention where they are located in their profile section is there any other way to know where your item is being shipped from?
The reason I feel this should be mandatory is due to an order that I placed on 11/28 from a shop for a couple Christmas gifts thinking to myself, this is PLENTY of time to get them in the mail... they still are not here. I made the mistake of buying from a seller who does not say where they are located anywhere that I can find and didn't know until they shipped the item that it was coming from South Korea. If I had known this prior to buying I would have looked elsewhere knowing the length of time it takes to get items from there in the mail. I am left to assume that the seller knows this and that is why they do not put their location on their profile. In hindsight any seller that doesn't share their location I will convo to ask before purchase, but if this were a mandatory section to fill out I feel that would save the buyers an extra step.
Just wanted to see what everyone's thoughts were on this subject. If there is some other way of knowing how to find the location that I don't know about please share!

There are some very valid privacy concerns. So the logical next suggestion is to choose the nearest major city. This has been argued before. Some want it, some do not.

Just above the shipping prices, it states which country the item ships from.

Yeah, I can see that... I guess my lesson learned is to convo before purchase when I am not quite sure the location!
Thanks :)

When viewing an individual listing, scroll down to the "ships from. . ." portion to see the real location* of the shop.
*The real location can still be obscured when creating a shop since an online site can be originated from anywhere.

typically I only buy if the store has a lower price for shipping to the US. If there's one big price for "everywhere else", it's a good bet the item is coming from "else" and will take forever. Well, I mean I've bought stuff from Canada before but I knew it was coming from Canada and was willing to wait.
But anyway yes I agree with you, it should be more obvious where an item ships from, I think this should be mandatory information.

But you can see the country on each item listing and that is more than enough - beyond country there's hardly a guarantee that something will come faster if it's closer to the buyer.
For me, it doesn't really matter because I don't ship things by mail however, I choose not to put the location because I don't want to have to keep updating it every time I'm somewhere else. I imagine that could get confusing.

I tend to agree - I clearly show I'm in South Africa yet still have had buyers who are surprised that shipping would take longer than 3 days because they assumed Etsy is 100% American :)
Can't imagine why anyone would need to not state where they are, unless they're on the move all the time ?

I know it shows "ships from" in the bottom, but I agree with the OP that it would be nice to see it in a more obvious place.
