ETA: It's gone now. Is it only appearing sometimes? How confusing... [You may safely ignore the rest of this post, if it's gone for good!]
2nd edit: Aha. It seems to only appear when I click on the orange Etsy icon to go to the front page, anything that brings up the URL www.etsy.com/?ref=si_home - rant below still stands after all!

Can you please make it so that those of us outside the US aren't shown an advert for your gift cards on the front page? We, obviously, can't buy them - and given the controversy around the roll-out in the first place, it's a bit like rubbing salt in the wound.
When you first introduced the banner, I remember that something was set so that I didn't see it - can't you re-introduce that? Whatever the setting was seems to have gone away, and it's more than a little galling to be told (repeatedly) how "perfect" Etsy gift cards are, and how I ought to buy one now, when I can neither buy nor accept them, no matter how much I'd like to.
Thanks in advance,
Nicole

Shoppers outside the US can buy them - but they can't be redeemed in shops that don't use direct checkout.

Nicole, do you have your Etsy page set up for the US or France? I think you must have selected the US and that's why you get the banner. What I mean specifically is look at the bottom of the page, you'll see language, currency and country. I have mine for the US for this browser and set for France for my other browser (second shop). I like to be able to see the front page for both countries... But I digress. I only saw the Etsy banner on the US front page and never on the France homepage.
Hope this makes sense!

Brittany, no, buyers outside the US cannot buy gift cards unless they have a US billing address. So that means most everyone outside the US can't buy them.
From the Etsy help section on gift cards:
You’ll need a credit card with a US billing address and an Etsy account to complete your purchase. If you don’t already have an account, register here.

We had a special pink valentine;s day gift card banner for a while in Australia but it was a glitch and they fixed it so it went away.

Yeah, that's the one Hannah - pink and gift cardy. Not a huge fan. (Though if I could buy gift cards, I might like it more!)
Karen, I've got English (UK)/USD/Everywhere - other than the fact I sell in USD, there's nothing there to indicate that I'm in the US, I think. Just on a point of principle, I kind of feel that I shouldn't have to specify that I'm in one of the 195-odd countries in the world that can't accept gift cards, rather than the 1 that can, in order to escape the advertising...
And when I click on the banner, Etsy obviously know full well that I'm not in the US, because I get the little yellow banner telling me I can't buy a gift card - can't they use that setting to not-show the banner in the first place? I think it's actually set up that way and this is just a switch that someone forgot to flick, because if I just go to etsy.com I don't get the banner, only if I click on something like the orange Etsy logo in the corner of the page, which brings up www.etsy.com/?ref=si_home which has the pink gift cards banner on it.

Nicole, you probably have your region set to US, which indicates you are in the US ;) Or at least indicates that you've chosen to get the US page with US advertising.
Look at the bottom of the page and click on the country, change it to France and no more advertising. We are given the option to choose our region, up to you what to choose.
Like Hannah says, she doesn't have the banner (after they fixed the bug). She must have her region selected as Australia.
I have mine set for France. No banner. When I switch it to US, banner for gift card.

If you have your region set to USA or Everywhere you see the Giftcard banner
If you set your region to any other country choice, you don't see the banner
So you have to make a choice -- see items from the whole world in search results and be annoyed by the banner
Or just see items from your region in search results and not be annoyed by the banner
Is it possible that the banner placement is coded by the shop's location as shown by their billing address rather than by their viewing preferences?

Marmalady, the region setting is separate from the search results filter, I believe. I have my region set to France but when I search, I remove the "ships to France" filter so I see all search results.
And no, the banner placement is not coded by the shop's billing address.
The region setting is on the bottom of the page where you select your currency, language and region settings. This is the currency to buy in and not the currency you sell in.

Yes Karen -- i know exactly what the filters on the bottom of the page are for - i have been on Etsy since long before such filters were available. Your "ships to France" filter is pre-selected for you because you have your region set as France.
I was suggesting to Etsy that they change the coding for when the banner is displayed --so it is governed by billing address not regional preference
