It would be nice to have your forum infraction record reset, (like they do with driving infractions) so people don't have an axe hanging over their heads for all eternity.
Seriously, if you made a mistake 3 years ago, why should your next infraction be the end of your forum life? It's silly and awful.
Thanks for considering this.

You have a point. People do change over time. For better or worse. I wonder when Etsy is 20 years old if it will have the same policy in the forums?

I didn't know about this policy.
I guess it helps keep track of someone who doesn't plan to change their ways as it establishes a pattern?

tell me about forum infractions. do they give you notice and tell you something like 3 strikes you're out? is there somewhere i can read about these notices?

There really doesn't have to be much of a pattern.
We're not necessarily talking about major infractions here. These are often minor disputes that member have with each other. One runs to admin to tell and the other gets a warning, a muting.
The next time someone runs to admin, you could be outta here, forever. It's so comforting to know that someone that has a problem with you in the forums can wield so much power.
The best part is, is that you see multitudes committing the same infractions, over and over again, and for several reasons, they're still here.

Do they get their privileges back at some point?
I imagine the infraction would have to be very bad to get muted.
I've engaged in some "hairy" threads and never received a warning.

No, I don't believe there is anywhere you can read about the warnings/mutings. There's the DO's and DON'Ts re: community
www.etsy.com/help/article/483#community_forums
which ends with:
"Violating community policies may result in suspension of community or other privileges and/or account termination"
...but it's all very subjective as to what they deem to be in violation. I believe it's not even 3 strikes now. I think it's one warning, then the next time your permanently muted.
I may be wrong on that, but I think that's what RobW said a while back.
It just seems so weird to have had a warning 2 or 3 years ago, for something minor, then get another warning 3 years later, and boom, you're gone.
I think it should reset itself every year. That to me would be much better.

Once you've been permanently muted, no you never get your forum privileges back.
...and NO, it doesn't have to be something really bad, not at all.
This is what actually bothers me the most. People think that those that have been permanently muted must be bad, horrible people. The majority are smart, funny and had a lot to contribute to the community.
