How to accept cash payment for local pickup?

I have a customer who works nearby and wants to pick up my item rather than have it shipped. She hasn't purchased it yet. I know that PayPal payment for local pickup is a bad idea, because a buyer can claim "item not received" and without confirmation of delivery the seller will lose both item and payment. I told her payment should be in cash, but I don't know how to handle this. If she pays cash, how is the sale recorded on Etsy? Is there a way to mark the item as "Paid" when a buyer pays in cash, in person?

You might be able to use the 'other' payment option just for this order--i.e. make a reserve listing for this customer with 'other' as the payment option (I hope this is still available). Also, you could get their signature + date on a duplicate copy of the invoice to have proof of delivery.
You enable "other" as a method of payment and have them checkout using "other". Once they've paid you can log in and on your receipt there will be a big, obvious place to mark it as paid (similar to marking it as shipped).

You will not qualify for any seller protection though, both etsy (and paypal if they paid through that) require a trackable delivery method to qualify for that. Are you taking a risk? yes. Is it a big risk? probably not.
Thanks, wonderfulstore and Victoria. I wish there was a way to enable "Other" payments for individual listings, rather than opening it up for all. I do prefer PayPal. But this sounds like the way to go.

Just wondering, Victoria, what's the risk you're referring to? The buyer will have the item and I'll have the cash....no chargebacks, and no INR because it's not through PayPal and not shipped. Am I missing something?
Create a coupon code just for them for free shipping. When they pick up the item have them sign a copy of the receipt as delivered. Then go back into your sold orders and mark it shipped.

Oh, I opened this because of the question. I get it now, you want to know how the transaction goes through?

I was gonna answer: stick out your hand and hold it there until they put the money in it.
Don't forget to have the buyer sign a receipt of purchase "form". This can just be something as simple as her saying "Received from [your name here], then the name and item number. And of course, have her sign and print her name and date the receipt too.
I have the "other" payment option enabled for my shop so that I don't have to go in and mess with it when someone local wants to buy a custom item. I've never had anyone use "other" as payment method unless I tell them to, so I don't see any reason to not have it as an option.
I would use other payment option, and have her meet you somewhere close. It you want have her sign an invoice that she received the item.

I never have clients come to my home, I always meet them at Denny's or Tim Horton's.

You have no proof of delivery if the buyer purchases through etsy and then files a dispute with etsy for non delivery. I don't know if a signature on an invoice is good for that or not.
