If the name has been used in the past, it can't be used again. Even if that shop is no longer in existence.

A shop name is forever, whether it is being used or not.

The other shop may no longer exist or not have opened yet.

ive run into the same frustration....took forever to come up with a shop name, searched for it, didnt see it in use.... tried to create it....denied :( very frustrating..... if someone ever used the name it would be unavailable or if they started to create an account with the name but never fully opened the shop it would be unavailable

I just opened a second shop and I think the hardest part was coming up with a name. After checking both Etsy and Google I decided that there are very few names still available.

shop names can only be used once, so if someone has used it in the past you can not use it again

This feature of Etsy (or lack thereof) is very annoying. My business is VincentV, not VincentVdesigns. But because someone used VincentV as a username (not even a shop name!) years ago and has never been active since, I can't use it. The name is now essentially hijacked. Extremely stupid.

Sorry, but you wouldn't think it was stupid if they did release names, you opted to use a previous shop name and unknown to you the name came with horrible baggage.
I am glad that Etsy doesn't release names. At least I knew the name I got was fresh and no problems associated with it. :)

Buyers only names are also considered shop names and can be taken that way. It may be an active account but not an active shop. Think of the confusion if you opened an account and later found a shop with the same name.
