There are question marks appearing below some of the links in this thread.

What does this mean? Is it a bug? Can anyone else see it?

Hi everyone! Many listing URLs will have a question mark at the end. You may notice that often URLs have additional symbols and text after the listing's title. This indicates how you arrived at a particular listing, but isn't necessary for re-linking to the item.

When posting a URL in a forum or Team discussion, you are welcome to remove the additional text beyond the listing title. Make sure to remove the question mark at the end if one is showing.

Note that you also have a brief amount of time to edit your post, so you can edit to delete the question mark if one has shown up.

I totally understand the annoyance this is causing, and I'm going to see if there's anything we can do from our end to prevent that pesky question mark from display. Thanks for reporting!

Me too Jenni & Hanna.

I am seeing lots of item links as of late with question marks at the end. Especially noticeable when making treasuries.

I am questioning the question marks.

I just noticed one too when posting to one of my teams. The question mark showed up after the item I was pasting into the thread. When I went back in to edit it I noticed that it was added onto the end of the item link. I went back in and edited it out... No more "?"

Noticed one in the thread posted before mine as well.

Clearly a bug!

It seems that etsy is now placing a '?' at the end of titles that are long. I looked at the following listing:

'Floral Triangle Banner, Women's Bunting Banner, Birthday Party Supply, Long Feminine Banner, Girls Photo Prop, Party Decor Streamer'

This is what the URL looks like, that one would copy from address bar:

'https://www.etsy.com/listing/112680139/floral-triangle-banner-womens-bunting?'

[NOTE: quotes added to prevent link becoming active]

Notice the question mark where the title is truncated.

When the URL is now copied and pasted into a thread comment, without quotes, the listing will render with picture but the ? will not be considered part of title so it will post below rendered picture as text.

I saw a comment from admin, regarding this issue (saying it was probably a user error with cut and paste) in another bug post, however, I believe the comment not correct. The question mark has just started appearing in the past four or five days and it would seem that is due to some change made by etsy regarding truncation of long titles.

NOTE: it also appears that the character count for what is considered 'long title' may have changed. I have reviewed many listings that were not considered long in past and now they are truncated with the question mark.

To confirm that the question mark appears, look at items in your shop and you will see the URL with ? at end. If you just copy/paste that URL, you will see issue that Jenni and others are reporting.

I'm not seeing the ? a the end of the URL, at least not right now.

Example:

This is a listing that I made copy paste for on 09.01.13, to my FBpage.

'https://www.etsy.com/listing/119954125/original-pen-and-ink-dahlia-drawing'

[quotes added to prevent live link]

The link above was a direct copy of URL, as seen in my etsy shop, for that listing.

This is how the URL appears today:

'https://www.etsy.com/listing/119954125/original-pen-and-ink-dahlia-drawing-on?'

[quotes added to prevent live link]


Notice that the question mark has been added and the truncation begin point has changed.

This is how listing appears in edit mode for 'Preview how your listing will appear in Google search results.' section:

It would seem that there has been a programmatic change, as stated in first post, regarding listing URLs. I will investigate what impact this change may have on display of title in google and other engines but I believe there will be no impact.



ETA: Jenni, if you are not seeing then that may indicate that this is 'some experiment' by etsy as this is usual when a small population sees something and others do not. For me, this phenomena just started as I did not see the question mark when reviewing some listings 2 days ago. I am interested to see if others will to post that they see question mark now at the end of a listing URL in their address bar.

Addendum:

To see if question mark appears for you in item URL, click your shop icon (little building next to etsy search bar) then click any item in your shop with long title. Look at URL of that item in address bar to see it the URL ends with a question mark.

Go to some other person's shop directly and click an item with long title. Look at URL of that item in address bar to see it the URL ends with a question mark.


NOTES: the question mark will not appear in some etsy search types (I am still research) and if a listing that shows ? on URL when viewed on etsy does not show a ? for that same URL when viewed as a result of google search..

Addendum 2:

It seems that the question mark append is not just due to long title truncate. it took me some minutes to find a listing with short title:

'http://www.etsy.com/listing/102145679/rustic-rock-lamp?'

Issue manifests regardless of browser used and with SSL or SSLnot enabled (information provided for completeness and confirmation of test parameters).
