Anyone Read This? Chad & the Senate

I think the point of the meeting was to analyze opportunities for growth and job creation. Etsy, as a marketplace, provides the tools for many entrepreneurs to build a small company, expand their reach, bring tangible income to their households.

I know that we put work into bringing in those sales but it is VERY easy in comparison to other opportunities out there. To open a physical storefront requires a greater investment. Think of all other typical work at home jobs we see out there: writing for blogs, completing surveys, working as a virtual assistant, medical transcriptions, selling insurance, etc. Those are very valid options for someone looking to bring home extra income. However, they are not nearly as easy as they seem to be. It takes a lot of hours and work to actually make money off them.

As well, Etsy does give you chance to make money doing something that almost NEVER feels like actual work.

In terms of what the government should do about it, I think they need to realize the potential of these types of online platforms. They need to take a deeper look at how this type of income affects each U.S. household and they should look into giving incentives so that more unemployed people consider learning a craft and creating a new source of income for themselves.

Imposing taxes or rules on sellers like us would certainly send the wrong message.

Hopefully, the conversation between Etsy and the government remains active. If not, it might not even be a bad idea for us to reach out to our senators ourselves and ask for these incentives. When I first heard about Chad's meeting with the US Senate, I immediately thought of the huge impact each one of us is making in this economy. We literally CREATE jobs, we CREATE income. Our government struggles with these things and we have figured out ways around that.

It is time we get some recognition for it.

Now the gov't will try to find a way to get involved somehow and muck it all up. I can see it now, New and Improved online store taxes. Lol.

thanks for posting. :)

Hi everybody,

Thanks for all the comments! I'm going to post an account of my trip to the Senate sometime this week. My only goal in speaking there was to make sure the Senators understood two things: 1) how important the contribution you all make is to the US (and world) economy and 2) the opportunities that an Internet platform like Etsy creates for people like you. Altogether, 17 Senators heard the message. I'm going to continue telling that story far and wide.

I also understand that running any kind of business is challenging and not easy. The "few clicks of a mouse" phrase was intended to illustrate how relatively simple it is to set up a shop on Etsy compared to some of the other very complex businesses that were presenting at the same session -- large-scale clothing manufacturers, metal fabricators, pharmaceutical companies, and others that require millions (if not billions) just to get started.

More to come!
awesome!! :)
Awesome. Thanks Chad!
Thanks for the posts, OP and Chad! I would bet this model is largely unknown to politicians who spend their days being courted by big business. It is absolutely true that we contribute to our own economies and this a model that should be known about and encouraged.

FrancescasFancy - you make an intelligent point. The more thirsty government becomes for increased tax revenue, the more likely they are to try to tap into potential tax revenues across State boundaries......after all the deductions, State taxes and the IRS, I think most of us are already working for well below MINIMUM wage. If an across the board internet sales tax were enacted.....geesh! I couldn't make it work anymore. So.....I'm not sure what the lawmakers who listened to Chad were contemplating...anyone have anything brilliant on the tax thing to add?

Everything I've read about the possible uniform sales tax gives a minimum annual sales amount that the vast majority of Etsy sellers wouldn't have to worry about ever reaching (even those who make a full living from their shops). It would actually make things simpler, because it would mean not even needing to collect sales tax for our own states. As long as they keep the small business exemption, I'm all for it. It could even give us an advantage over the larger megabucks businesses who have to collect it. (And, of course, sales tax in general doesn't add any payment from us - we just collect it.)

--Thanks for dropping in, Chad. Looking forward to the article.
Thanks, Chad! I think it was a great visit, and the reality is that there are so many etsians like me, that started their etsy shop when their family was affected by the economy and started out with NOTHING, I mean, literally nothing (I used to buy small bottles of oil at the grocery store and save them up) and were able to lift their family out of financial trouble. Now I'm able to help others, like the small business that cleans my house, and just hired my first part time employee. I created TWO jobs, mine and hers. And I can do it all in my jammies if I want (and I am!).
