Crocheting burial items

This isn't exactly a business topic but I hope some other crocheters can help me.

I am having the hardest time finding burial gown/hat patterns for 1 lb. babies. I also am having a really hard time gearing up to make the gown.

We just found out my cousin's second baby, whom she's been trying to have for 10 years, doesn't have a brain or skull. They'll be delivering him or her next week at 17 weeks.

They've asked me to make a gown, hat and afghan for them. I've made preemie hats before, but nothing so small. Any tips?

I am so very sorry to hear this..The only thing I can think of to do is google gestational baby size at 17 weeks..
I'm so sorry, what a tragedy, and a tough request to fill.

Can you maybe do a little research online about the typical size of a 17-week fetus and calculate the size from that information?
Reba, I'm so sorry. I know how hard that is.

Perhaps there is a specialist charity or foundation that you could approach for advice? If you can find a support forum for parents in similar situations, they might be able to make a suggestion.

:( The universe can be tough. Wishing for a brighter tomorrow for your cousin.
I've found a few gown patterns for 2-3 lb. preemies so I'm thinking if I use a smaller hook, that would work for a 1 lb. baby. I'm just so scared of making it too big since a lot of what I've read says it's very important not to make the baby look any smaller than he or she already is.

I think I've found an afghan pattern that is for that same size so that fulfills one of the three needs.
Hugs and prayers for your family.

I know it may sound strange but is there any patterns for small dolls that may be able to be adapted.
I'd suggest that you take a look at doll patterns rather than baby patterns. Something around a Barbie doll size may be more appropriate.

I hadn't thought about doll patterns. Thank you!

This is all happening so fast and it's just been really hard on all of us so no one's got their thinking caps on really - including me.

Thank you all for the kind words and prayers - this is really such a heartbreaking thing.
A 17wk fetus would be very small. Around 5-6 inches long if I remember my Pregnancy books correctly.

I am so sorry for you cousin. Truly heartbreaking.

ETA: That is crown to rump. Forgot that they measure top of head to bottom as legs are so curled up its not a reliable measurement at such a small size.
I was just going to suggest what crochetgal said.

I've personally delivered at 16/17 weeks - the baby had stopped developing a few weeks before that. Trust me, they are very very tiny.
