Original Post

Don't know if any of you are aware about the Stop Online Piracy Act Law that congress is pushing to pass this 24th.

This will affect the way we work if the bill is passed.

I was reading and supposedly if have a blog and if one of my followers posts anything like a video of someone singing a cover of a song that's copyrighted, I'm inflicting the law?

I'm writing this thread to shed some light about the topic and hear your thoughts and feelings.

Either the Senate will kill it, or it will come under a preliminary injunction and go up to judicial review. It won't stand Constitutional muster, as it kinda ignores due process, which was important enough that the rights to due process are enumerated twice in the Constitution, and several times in the Bill of Rights.

That doesn't keep it from being a terrible bit of legislation, and you should make your congressperson/senator aware of it.

So true! As an american living in Puerto Rico, it's a tad hard to get people interested because really the majority of the population believe that just because they have their own constitution, most legislations such as these don't affect them; which is a huge error. And, it's even harder to get any local politician interested in the matter enough to even make a statement. So all those of you in the US (can't wait to go back home) please make your voice heard.

Darbynwoods-David from Darbynwoods says Edited on Jan 10, 2012

nothing, the big guys will kill it. the reason is that they do not want to be held responsible for what others put on there site. It will be toned down so that if it is a known repeat offender and they are not folloing the cease and disist letters they get then they will be fined.

this is no different than the due not call list. I am still hearing from the people who want to reduce my credit card debt. they do not like me due to i ask for help and then put them on hold for an hour or so. i just keep telling them that i am looking for the bills

I've been signing ever petition against it I can find and encouraging anyone who will listen to do the same. It has the potential to shutter the internet as we know it and take a site like Etsy completely offline forever.
[There are too many users posting derivative works of copyrighted things and not enough Etsy employees to vet every item as it is submitted. So- gone.]

Chances are it wont pass...

But on the scary chance that it does, the ever lovely "hackers" of the internet will find ways around it =)

You're welcome Funny. I think this is massively important and it galls me how few people even seem aware of it. The news blackout on it is deeply unnerving.
Here's the biggest anti-SOPA petitions I could find-
