Consignment sale in the Sates
If you want to argue taxes, I think you'd probably find UK taxes in general when added together are higher, but that's because we have a lot more national services. So you can't really compare :)
Back to the original question. I wouldn't do consignment (known as sale or return here) outside the UK. But then I don't do it anyway, it's always ended up badly!
I think we'd both be able or would try to argue our general taxes are worse than each other - ;-)

Yes, I was talking as a buyer, I've bought a couple of things from US and ended up having to pay so much in duty it just wasn't worth it. (can't remember exactly but think its either anything worth over £20 or £50 (rate @1.6 = $) we have to pay duty on.
was it actually duty, or VAT that you paid? if it was VAT and you are registered as a business, then wouldnt you get that credit for VAT paid somewhere along the line
