The other evening, I watched the delightful movie 'Funny Face' with Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire. Audrey's stunning cinched waist wedding dress (see last photo) was my inspiration for my newest couture apron. I wanted to create something that was reminiscent of the fashions of the 1940's and 50's. If you ladies have ever seen a sewing pattern from that era, you know exactly what I mean. The tiny cinched waist and full hips of that era fascinates me...did woman really look like that??? As with most of my couture aprons, this one began as something else entirely. The main skirt is fashioned from a pale yellow Lands End cotton oxford dress shirt. The next two layers had a former life as a valance of sheer cream cotton and the top layer consists of two antique cotton embroidered doilies and a vintage floral hankie in the center. I love restyling old discarded fabric. The second and third sheer layers fall in a lovely full gathered scallop design. The hankie and doilies are also softly gathered into the waistband. If you zoom into the waistband you can see it is fashioned from a beautiful taffeta print with butterflies and flowers....so elegant. The vintage hankie is bordered with pink violets, green leaves and a soft scallop edge. The embroidered doilies also have pink flowers and a black design with crocheted edging. To add a little extra elegance to my apron, I created a fabric flower using some of the sheer valance material, some pink toile and a diamond accent vintage button. My apron ties at the back with a luscious pale green and pink cotton full bow. Because we women have our secrets, I have added a small secret pocket under the top three layers and trimmed it with vintage eyelet lace. Any woman wearing this apron will command the attention of the room...it cannot be ignored or passed off as just a kitchen apron...this is a one-of-a-kind creation. Go ahead..treat yourself or someone you love. If you are an apron collector this one is a must.
Please hand wash cold water and hang to dry (treat as fine washable due to vintage elements)
My apron measures :
23 inches in waist
3 inches high band
19 inches top front to bottom hem
37 inch ties
