The scoop on Folk Art Mary: Mary Michael Shelley has been making her carved and painted american folk art pictures for more than 35 years. With no formal visual art training, she went to college with an interest in becoming a writer. Soon after she graduated, her father made Mary a carved and painted picture of of her riding her horse at the farm where she grew up. Her father’s gift inspired Mary to begin carving pictures herself.
Mary lives and works in Ithaca, NY in the heart of the Finger Lakes region. Her winter studio is a two car garage in back of her house, and her summer studio, where she demonstrates making her work, is a booth at the prize winning Ithaca Farmers' Market. Her artwork has been variously described as American Folk Art, self taught, naive, primitive or even outsider. Her work is in the collection of numerous museums, including the High Museum, the American Museum of Folk Art, Fenimore Art Museum, and the American Museum in Bath, England.
