Artist made wooden knitting needles! are they tools, are they art?
Yes, they are!
When I needed giant knitting needles for a giant knitting project using some super bulky hand spun art yarn I quickly discovered giant knitting needles don't grow on trees! Sure, I could buy cheap, factory produced plastic needles, but really, they wouldn't be suitable to use with fine, artist spun fibers like Merino Wool, silk, and mohair, now wood they?
I clearly needed to craft a pair of my own needles. Needles with a utilitarian simplicity. Needles with a touch of class. I started by hand carving quality wood dowels to a gradual taper, finished to a nice point. I sanded them to a shockingly smooth finish. I put a knob on the end and used a brass screw to make them fancy. I gave them a glistening wax finish. I stamped them big and bold with size information, my name, and the date.
And I looked at them and said to myself, “Nice. Wonder if anyone else might need a pair?”
You don't have to be a knitter to admire and enjoy these tastefully designed, hand made tools. They are usable for hammock knitting, Vampire killing*, and poking. They make splendid conversation pieces, an exciting addition to your needle collection, the best knitter gift ever, and are visually interesting and physically alluring!
Each pair is numbered and initialed.
These limited edition needles are a special order item. I make them when you buy them, generally ship in 4-6 days.
I have listed 2 Pair. The quantity you would order would be 1, for a pair.
The standard length of the needles is a generous 12”. They are finished with a hard, smooth butcher block wax. I stain the needles before waxing,
If you need longer and/or different diameter needles, I can make them for you.

*27th Street Fibers doubts Vampires even exist, frankly. In spite of all the face time they get these day on the TV. But if one ever does show up, having these humungous knitting needles nearby wouldn't be a bad thing, you know?
*My yarns are spun from the highest quality fibers: wools, (Merino, Romney, Lincoln, etc.), Silk, Mohair and Alpaca. The majority of my fiber, as well as equipment, is purchased from small animal friendly farms and spinner's flocks, and family businesses, in the USA.
*My one man fiber studio uses mostly only muscle powered tools in the production of its product!
*Photos are as close to accurate in color as currently possible. For me.
