Description

The first photo shows "Ashley" who grew this fleece. The other photos are examples; they are not of this particular fleece. The photo of Ashley was taken when she was a lamb. She's now 2 and has just had two beautiful lambs.

This fleece is very beautiful. It has typical fiber and a medium staple for a SBF -- about 8 inches. It has been finely skirted. It is very clean and has low VM. Ashley has a black spot on her side that results in a mix of of black and white fiber (heather grey). This only amounts to about a handful of fleece, but I left it in with the rest of the fleece so you can play with it.

Go to: www.nordinfarms.com/gallery.htm to see our farm.

I blade shear (non-electric) our sheep using a shearing stand, so the fleece comes off in two pieces (a left and right side). The last photo shows our shearing process (although I usually don't have help). We do not jacket our sheep, so it contains some vegetable matter. The VM is very minimal, however; and typically comes out during fiber preparation (washing and combing or carding).

"If there's any longwool in the warp threads of the weave, the stuff lasts and lasts for years, even under farm conditions!" (Nathan Griffith; "Sheep! Magazine" March/April, 2004 "Farm Duds: Let's Wear More Wool")

Wool is an insulator keeping our sheep cool in summer and warm in winter. When I'm shearing in the sun, I'm always amazed at how hot the outside of a black fleece can get, but next to the skin where my hands run the shears it's cool to the touch. In winter, when given the option, our sheep prefer to be outside even when temperatures drop to -25F (-35C). If it works for them, it'll work for you.
