Description

Digital Planographic Print.

Many of my prints begin as photographs I take around the city of Milwaukee, the state of Wisconsin and during my travels through the United States, Canada and Europe. Others are based upon my original paintings.

I start by digitally imaging the selected photo or painting. Using one of several digital-inking devices, I transfer the image to a flat, unetched, printing plate. I sometimes manipulate the inked image on the plate to achieve desired, artistic effects.

I then transfer the image to printing paper using a variety of hand-pressing techniques.

Almost all the ink from the plate is transfered to the paper. I wipe the remainder of the ink from the plate after printing.

Unlike Giclee or direct-to-paper ink jet prints, each of my prints is hand-pulled and one-of-a-kind. Each print is signed and numbered 1/1.

Acid-free paper is used for all my prints. Each print is treated for UV protection.

The image area is approx. 7.25"x9.75". There is a .75" white border. It is printed upon Borden & Riley #234 Paris acid-free paper.

I retain all reproduction rights. No reproductions of this artwork can be made without my written consent.

What is a digital planographic print?

A digital planographic print is a fine art print that begins as a digital image. The image is transfered to a smooth, non-absorbent surface (plate.) via an ink-jet printer. Ink might also be applied to the plate by manual techniques. Multiple plates might be used to compose the final image.

Ink can also be removed from the plate to create lightened areas within colored areas. This is called the "subtractive" technique.

The image is then transferred onto a sheet of paper by pressing the paper and plate together. Pressure is applied either by hand techniques or by using a printing-press. The transferring of the image to the paper is called "pulling".

Digital planographic prints are similar to monotype prints in that the process produces a unique print. Most of the colorant is removed during the first pressing.

Unlike monotype prints, subsequent prints might be possible after re-inking the plate(s). Each print will be noticeably different from any other prints pulled.

Stencils, watercolor, solvents, brushes, and other tools can be used to enhance a print after it has been pulled.
