Shadowland unique Shadow Lamp Night Light Lighting at its most original LOVE AT WORK
Description
SHADOWLAND: Where we are the dreams, and our shadows . . . reality.Like most other things you see in my shop, this idea began as a dream. Since I was already making lamp shades, it was in my brain that anything was possible. The fun of hand shadows always fascinated me. So in my mind I see two hands on the front of a lamp forming a shadow. When the bulb is switched on, the silhouette of an old man’s face appears where the hands meet the light. I wake up the next morning, and using crap around the house, I make this light. Hand draw the hands onto a piece of 50’s fiberglass. Hot glue it into a piece of wood. Then hot glue a hoop with mylar attached to it behind the front image. On the mylar I handpaint the face of an old man. Put a socket in the wood base, turn the light on, and PRESTO! you have a shadow on the front of your lamp.
Then my logical side kicks in and says, “but we project hand shadows on the wall.” So I add another hoop with another silhouette of an old man behind the light bulb. Now I have a shadow on the front of the lamp and also on the wall behind it. And the further you move the lamp from the wall, the larger the shadow becomes. . . . SHADOWLAND was born.
My first few lamps were what I call the “Frankensteins of shadowlamps” . . . all just experiments, sawing grooves into wood and hotgluing in the discs. But over time, I perfected the lamp. I created discs that plug into the base and are interchangeable. I installed a switch in the wooden base and place felt on the bottom for a beautiful finished look. More importantly, I perfected the concept. At first they were just hand shadows creating people and animals. But as I expanded my inventiveness, the lamps began to tell stories. Clip art became invaluable to me as it was perfect for this medium. With the light off, you see an image. What are they doing? What are they thinking? What’s going on here? Then the light comes on completing a story. And every shadow projected on the front of the lamp also appears on the wall behind it.
I’ve since created about 40 different lamps. I’m offering in my shop some of my particular favorites and enough of a variety to hopefully give all of you the idea of how far I can go with this. Here I give you, “LOVE AT WORK." The image on front is clip art. A man gives a woman an engagement ring. From the look on her face, what will she decide? Yes? No? "I would if you weren't so damned ugly??" When the light is turned on, her head is surrounded by 3 cherubs, all trying their best to influence her decision. And of course, the cherubs appear much larger on the wall behind the lamp. A wonderful lamp for lovers or as a bridal shower gift or even a wedding gift.
They can act as pieces of art when the light is on or off. They can be night lights for a child’s room. They convey all sorts of emotions and humor. And above all, you are the storyteller. I think of these lamps like “clouds.” One cloud in the sky can mean a hundred different things to a hundred different people. What story does the lamp speak to you??
If you have any questions or would like to see some pictures of other lamps that I have done, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I love answering queries. And among all my creations, the shadowlamps remain my favorites. Thanks for checking in. Take care, your pal, Paul W.
