obama spray paint stencil white tshirt MEDIUM blue red BELIEVE graffiti art
Description
This is an original, handmade, spray paint stencil tshirt - Fruit of the Loom 100% cotton mens undershirt style t with blue and red print. (Tips of the rays are red.) Shirt has been laundered once; some fading has occurred but that should be about it, as long as you either hand wash it or wash it in cold on delicate. THIS IS A ONE-OF-A-KIND ART SHIRT IN SIZE MEDIUM (mens/unisex).Inspired by the recent Shepard Fairey "HOPE" posters of Senator Obama, and by Obama himself, I wanted to do something of my own to help promote and raise some money for his campaign. I've never been moved to want to contribute money to or get involved in any way with any political campaign before in my life, but this candidate has managed to motivate and inspire me in a way no other politician ever has.
Being an indie/DIY artist, I don't have a lot of money, but I can make art. So I decided to make a stencil and do prints and now OOAK tshirts. I've been a stencil artist for many years now, generally preferring to stencil on tshirts and other clothing and unconventional, recyclable things like vinyl records, scrap wood and baking pans. I actually started stencilling as a means of protest in the year 2000, after the presidential election theft by Bush. One of my first stencils was that of Bush's head with the word "evildoer" underneath it; it has remained one of my most popular designs over the years, as you might imagine. So here I am again, eight years later, but this time actually excited and hopeful about the election. I wanted to make something positive this time around, to support the candidate who gives me hope that maybe, just maybe, things can get better in this country if we all come together.
I got a little obsessed with the now-ubiquitous Shepard Fairey "HOPE" and "PROGRESS" posters, but I wanted to create something that was more me, more street level/DIY looking, something that you might see actually stencilled on a sidewalk or dumpster, with a more commanding message. "Believe" seemed the right message to put with it, as both an affirmation for those who already support Obama, and alternately as an attempt to convince those who don't yet.
And no, I didn't rip off any other artist. I know there are a few similar style designs floating out there, but this came totally out of my own head and my own surroundings, and I hadn't seen those other designs when I made mine. I purposely appropriated a Mao-ist design scheme and the ever-popular rays eminating from Obama's head. But I didn't do it because some other street artist or designer did it in Chicago or elsewhere; I did it because I have a Mao poster on my wall that I really love, and I really dig the propaganda-style poster art of many different eras.
$5 from each tshirt sale will be donated back to the Obama campaign - I've already made and donated $75 so far! I will be keeping a ticker on my website, artbymags.com, to indicate how many items I have sold and I will periodically donate to the campaign as money accumulates. You can follow the progress of this fundraising effort via my website, www.artbymags.com.
