Heart-shaped Bird Nest Builder/Helper (empty) - Set of Two

Description

These little contraptions are Bird Nest Builder/Helpers. When you fill the cages with nesting materials and put them outside in the spring birds will come and take the goodies and use them to build their nests. They are made from recycled plastic covered wire grid snow fence which keeps the nesting materials from blowing away and gives the birds something to hang on to while they choose their building supplies. The cages measure 6 inches wide by 5 1/2 inches high, are about 5/8 of an inch wide and they have a wire loop for hanging.

Depending on the types of birds that frequent your yard, excellent materials to offer for nesting are:
- straw, dried grasses and small twigs
- dog and cat hair
- short lengths of thread, string, wool and ribbon
- thin strips of cotton fabric
- dried corn husk
- raffia and jute cord
- moss
- cotton balls and feathers
- bull rush fluff or other natural fluff produced by wild plants
- dryer lint

A friend of mine told me that last fall she noticed something glinting in the sunshine up in one of her trees. On closer inspection she realized that it was a bird nest that had pieces of Christmas tinsel laced through it. What a resourceful little bird!

Who says bird nests have to be brown and boring? By offering nesting materials like thread clippings, wool and pet hair the birds around your home can have pretty, colourful nests. So keep these items out of the land-fill and help your local birds jazz-up their nests!

Picture three shows the opening in the top of the nest helper and picture four is of a robin and her babies. She built her nest in a juniper tree just outside of our living room window...quite a treat for our indoor cat - it was like cat TV (picture 5).

The nest helpers come with an instruction sheet which includes a list of nesting material suggestions and helpful hints for filling the cage. It also comes with four recycled heart-shaped papers that make filling easier.
