God of My Fathers, Child of My Sons, 8X8
Description
This image was created soon after Dean learned of his Amerind heritage (he is 1/8th Cherokee). He was contemplating his connection to the world and reevaluating spirituality and his part in the universe. This was a time of changes for him in many ways. He was wallking on the state beach in Half Moon Bay, California, and came across a huge whale skull that had been rescued from the punishment of the surf and brought to the top of the cliffs. He shot this image from the rear of the skull (the circular hole is where the nerve bundle passed through from the brain). This is a manipulated image: Dean took the right half of the image, duplicated it and flopped it to create this wonderful little anthopomorphic figure.Dean titled this image "God of my fathers" because the American Indians revered the whales and offered them the respect of a deity, and "Child of my sons" because our children will likely be tasked with recreating them from genetic records in a few centuries.
