Restraint No. 2, 7X12

Description

This is a detail image of a bridge in Redding, CA. The graceful curve and soft pastel light gives this image an otherworldly feeling that sticks with you. It's almost as though this is a bridge into another reality.

Dean was in town to photograph the Shasta County Municipal Building and was told of the Sundial Bridge and how wonderful it was. He took this with a grain of salt because he didn't expect anything truly spectacular in such an out-of-the-way place.

Dean was very pleasantly surprised to find one of the world's great engineering achievements spanning the Sacramento River. Santiago Calatrava is without a doubt a brilliant engineer and has created not only a wonderful bridge but a true work of art.

The strength and power of the design is incredible and will stand out as one of humanity's greatest achievements in both engineering and art. Dean is still surprised to find it in Redding, CA.

This is a remarkbly powerful image. You can feel how the lightness of the mass of the bridge wants to launch itself into the deep blue sky and fly free but is being held back and anchored by the cables. The urge to break to bonds of reality is very great and this is why there are so many restraints, just like the dreams and aspirations of normal men.

This image was shot at about 5:30 PM. and it was about 110 degrees. Dean had to set the camera up and stand there in the heat with almost no breeze and wait for 45 minutes until the angle of the sun was just right. With the reflected light the temperature was significantly greater than the ambient air temperature. It was painful and difficult for Dean to force himself to be patient, but he endured the discomfort, and the result is well worth it.
