Recycled Rolling Rock Beer Bottles Cast Paperweight 110B

Description

This paperweight was formed by flattening recycled Rolling Rock beer bottles in a glass production kiln. The bottles were cut apart, broken and some parts were smashed. The cut pieces were carefully arranged into a casting mold and fired to 1550 degrees in my glass kiln. After the piece cooled, the smashed bits were added. The glass was slowly heated a second time to 1600 degrees in order to completely fuse the pieces together. The paperweight was properly annealed [slowly cooled] in the kiln.

I tried to include as many of the features of the bottles as possible in the paperweight: The name Rolling Rock, of course, the horse head on the sawtooth, the horse head on the neck, and Latrobe B[rewing] on the bottom of the paperweight.

Due to the nature of the painted on labels on the beer bottles and the type of casting, this piece is not entirely smooth. Many of the painted surfaces of the paperweight feel a bit like a finer grit sandpaper. All shart edges have been ground with my glass grinder and hand finished with glass hand pads.

Four 3M silicon bumpons with adhesive are included for placement on the bottom of the paperweight.
