About the Shards of Narsil:

This sword was originally forged by a famous weaponsmith Dwarf named Telchar, and the name refers to "fire" and "white light", the sun and moon. Elendil was the first of the kings of Gondor and Arnor. Elendil perished in the War of the Last Alliance against the evil Sauron. His heir Isildur used the shard of the sword Narsil to cut the One Ring from Sauron's hand. Sauron's spirit survived, although his spirit fled and was defeated. The shards were taken to Rivendell and it was one of the heirlooms of the Kings of Arnor. The Sword was reforged in Rivendell during the War of the Ring. Once it was reforged it was named Anduril by Aragorn, Isildur's heir. It is referred to as the Sword that was Broken or the Sword Reforged. Narsil is a symbol of law over evil and it is also symbol of the Kingship of Arnor and Gondor.
