Here is a pair of my small/medium salad servers hand-made from Queensland Kauri Pine.

Kauri is a huge tree from the rainforests of eastern and northeast Australia. It also occurs as various other species (same genus) around other countries of the western Pacific rim - New Zealand, Fiji, Indonesia, New Guinea, Timor. Kauri wood has been used as a fine furniture timber in the past although now is mostly used for feature work. It finishes to a wonderful warm creamy yellow color which almost glows in the light.

The size of this salad server pair is approx. 11 inch (280mm) so they are considered small to medium. They will work effectively in all size salad bowls, but won't get 'lost' in really big ones. They are also a great shape for using on a shallow salad platter.

The great thing about these spade shaped servers is that they can be handled like a paddle for tossing salad ... and then held by the handles for serving. I always get asked a lot for salad hands or bear claws at my local selling outlet ... and I don't particularly like them. My spade servers are comfortable to use in the same manner as salad hands but offer the added benefit of a handle.

Like all of my utensils, these servers are finished to a very smooth finish and fully sealed with a food grade 2 part sealer. Unlike utensils which are only coated in oil (vegetable or mineral) which washes off the first time you wash them, the sealing process that I use ensures that your utensils will keep their color and look great for several years.

The sealing process also creates an effective moisture barrier which preserves the wood, preventing cracking or mould growth. It largely prevents the wood from absorbing liquids from your food, hence eliminating the risk of growing bacteria or other nasties.

Your salad servers are pretty much maintenance-free. You can oil them if you really wish, but you aren't obligated to ... they will maintain their appearance in normal use. If they find their way into the dishwasher by mistake ... don't panic ... they'll be OK, as long as it's only occasional. To wash them, treat them like any of your hand-wash items and wipe dry after use.
