Title: “Sunday Best"Series: “Chubby”
Size: 11 inches by 14 inches by 1.5 inches
Sunday Best is a part of the “Chubby” series. This woman sits in her Sunday Best watching her family play at the beach. It seems like the quintessential sunday morning in Rhode Island back in the day. Similar to the Fisherman painting, I kept her and the rest of the foreground in the sepia tone I normally use for Chubby paintings, however I added in some pale earth tones in the background...it's a visually interesting play bewteen the two.
“Chubby”: an ongoing series of paintings based on black and white, sometimes out-of-focus photographs I’ve found in antique shops/flea markets, in bins littered with hundreds of discarded family photos, vacation snapshots, and postcards. I choose an image because I feel connected to the person who took the photograph or the person in front of the camera. I want to document, synthesize, even extend the life stories of these left-behind people through color and line.
The canvas is painted a chocolate brown on all sides so there is no need for framing.
