Serpent Art Dress Recycled Vintage Silk Nightgown
Description
I made this piece for a Recycled Fibers fashion show. The snake is an ancient symbol of rebirth, because it is continually shedding its skin. In this way the serpent became the ideal symbol for this project, transforming a garment and giving it a new life. This is a silk nightgown, probably from the 1930’s, that I selectively dyed. I then silkscreened a wraparound design of trees and snakes along the bottom. Then I appliquéd silk fabric in the shape of a serpent that wraps around the body. The dark pink “spine” is made from a recycled silk sari.
