Brooch - Item BHB03

Description

This is a real unique and beautiful brooch or pin which is approximately 1.75 inches in diameter. This brooch is made from Spalted Shagbark Hickory that came from Missouri. It is turned from the end of the wood to get the pattern of the annual rings and other natural patterns in the wood. Spalted means the wood is in the first stages of decay and fungus has made some interesting black patterns in the wood. Drying of the wood stops the decaying process. I've sanded the brooch to a 600 grit sandpaper which accentuates the annual rings and patterns. I stabalized and strengthen the wood by soaking it with thin Cyanoacrylate glue and applying a finish of shellac. I then polish the shellac and buff on a coat of hard carnuba wax. This brooch is polished to a high gloss to accent the annual rings and colors in the wood. It will go with any attire because of it's natural color. It will also make a wonderful gift for someone special.
