Handsewn Guatemalan Stripes Miniature Carpet No. 2 5X7
Description
***The mat and frame are for illustrative purposes only and are not included.***I hand-sewed five strips of used huipiles onto fleece using a metallic embroidery thread, which gives it a subtle sparkle.
The main colors in this piece are tones of red, ranging from a relatively bright red, to brick red and brownish red.
The zig-zag pattern is a typical Mayan one, known as the "decorated serpent". A snake symbolizes fertility, and the ups and downs also represent the ups and downs of a woman's life.
This piece is about 5 1/4" X 7", and with the border it's about 6 3/4" X 9". I made it with a 5X7 mat in mind, leaving a border to make it easier to attach. But you could also use a custom mat to include the brown as part of the art as well.
I think this would make a lovely and unique carpet in a 1/12 scale dollhouse. Fleece doesn't really fray, so you could trim off the border as desired.
A huipil is the traditional blouse worn by Guatemalan women; it is hand-woven on a backstrap loom and is a work of art on its own. Designs vary by village, and some feature Mayan symbols and geometric shapes, while others have more European influences like flowers and more realistic depictions of animals (as opposed to very stylized Mayan versions of animals). I love to buy used huipiles and make things from them!
