Description

Washi.Chiyogami.Aizome Traditional Origami Peace Cranes

There are 20 cranes for sale in this set. 20 cranes for $30.00. My non-traditional, embellished origami ornaments, are $8.00 for a single crane. There are 10 cranes pictured, you will receive 2 cranes of each design. Cranes are 3"x6"

This group of cranes are made in the traditional fashion, paper only, no decoration is applied, no glue, paint or glitter. The majority of my origami work is altered, embellished and non-traditional. This traditional set of cranes are made with Washi paper. This paper is very sturdy and feels like fabric that is a bit stiff yet has a smooth soft hand. These cranes will stay true to their forms and not get crushed and marred because the paper is so sturdy. Enjoy their perfect beauty gracing your environment. You can compress them and tuck them into envelopes sending them to favorite and potential friends.

Origami paper derives its name from its origins. This can include the fiber base that is used to make it, what papermaking family it came from, what technique was used to make it, its attributes and its traditional use. A part of the name includes the words for "paper"-"shi", "gami" or "kami". Here are some common names used with origami paper.

Aizome/Aizomeshi -- "indigo (ai) dyed (zome)" Traditional aizome came in shades of pale blue (asagi), light blue (hanadairu), and dark blue (kon). Today, aizome are still dyed with natural colorings but are not limited to shades of blue. Much of the aizome produced comes from the Tokushima, formerly known as Awa, area of Japan.

Washi -- "Japan(wa)paper(shi)" Japanese paper made by hand using traditional techniques. Washi is known for its beauty and strength, and is traditionally 6" squares.

Chiyogami -- "thousand generations (chiyo) paper (gami)" Chiyogami is a bright, highly decorative stenciled or printed paper often used for craft purposes. This paper was originally printed using wooden blocks. Today, it made with silk screening or printing. Traditional prints are often emblems of long life and happiness (cranes and tortoises) or auspicious symbols of good fortune (pine trees, flowering plum trees and bamboo). Chiyogami designs may also symbolize every day life, events and activities. Many of these traditional designs trace back to the Edo period (1603-1867).
