Create a customized, one of a kind Baby Friendly Beads nursing necklace featuring Mom’s birthstone and the birthstones of her children or other family members. Or design a grandmother’s necklace that she can wear around the baby!

Or, choose from the list of semiprecious stones to design a personalized necklace with unique qualities. Folklore suggests that certain stones have specific, traditional associations, and many believe that these stones can benefit mom, or the baby, or both. (See below for descriptions and information about ordering).

This listing is for a three stone custom birthstone nursing necklace with one larger stone and two smaller stones. Your three stone design could symbolize a child (larger stone) and both parents (smaller stones) -- or mom (larger stone) and two children (smaller stones) -- or some other combination.... it's up to you!

Semiprecious stone beads are the focal points of each necklace, with black glass and sterling silver beads strung on adjustable length black cotton cord to complete the design.

This listing price is for the three stone design: for example, one stone for Mom and two for the children. Mom’s birthstone is the larger donut shaped stone bead at the bottom of the pendant, with the smaller stone beads for the children on the pendant.

The pictured necklace shows Mom’s stone as Tigers Eye (Gemini), and the stones for her two children are Green Aventurine (Aries) and Rainbow Fluorite (Aquarius).

At full length, each necklace is approximately 26" around; the pendant is about 1 ½” long. Please expect slight variations in length and pendant length, as the stones may vary in size.

The final pictures show sample beads for each of the semiprecious types of birthstones that can be used. Please note that since stones are unique by nature, some variation in color and size may occur. Because each necklace is one of a kind, the sterling silver beads and black glass beads used may also vary slightly from those shown in the sample design.

Each of the birthstones are traditionally associated with their own specific set of attributes. Folklore tells us that they can be worn and used to promote or enhance certain qualities. Please see below for a description for each stone along with some of its traditional metaphysical characteristics.

GREEN AVENTURINE: Aries (March 21- April 20)

Green Aventurine is a type of Quartz. It is a light, milky green and is transparent. Aventurine is associated with healing, abundance, and leadership. It calms and soothes, promotes creativity, and brings good luck.

RHODONITE: Taurus (April 21 - May 21)

Rhodonite is an opaque, pink stone with veins of white and/or grey. It is associated with unconditional love. It stabilizes the emotions, enhances self-esteem, and promotes patience.

TIGERS EYE: Gemini (May 22 - June 21)

Tigers eye is a type of Quartz. It is an opaque, chatoyant stone which reflects light (like a cat’s eye) and glimmers in shades of brown, black, and gold. It is associated with optimism, good luck, and confidence. It balances emotions, uplifts the spirit, and protects against the evil eye.

CARNELIAN: Cancer (June 22 - July 22)

Carnelian is a type of Quartz. It is a translucent orangey-red. It is associated with courage, confidence, and strength. It strengthens family bonds, aids communication, calms anger, protects against envy, and banishes depression.

According to Persian folklore, Quartz stones help babies with the intake of mother’s milk.

RED JASPER: Leo (July 23 - August 21)

Red Jasper is a type of Quartz. It is an opaque orangey-red, often with black or grey veins. It is associated with protection, grounding, and healing. It enhances compassion, helps recall dreams, and promotes fairness.

According to Persian folklore, Quartz stones help babies with the intake of mother’s milk.

Folklore also tells us that Jasper can help ease the pain of childbirth or heal gynecological problems, so this could be a good stone for an expecting mom or a new mom recovering from a difficult birth.

MOSS AGATE: Virgo (August 22 - September 23)

Moss agate is a type of Quartz. It combines shades of green, from opaque dark green to transparent light green or clear, sometimes with white or brown. It is associated with prosperity, healing, and creativity. It is a protective stone, and it brings abundance and promotes self-confidence.

ROSE QUARTZ: Libra (September 24 - October 23)

Rose Quartz is a transparent, light pink stone. It is associated with love, beauty, and nurturing. It balances emotions, increases compassion, and promotes all forms and expressions of love. It is an especially protective stone during pregnancy and childbirth.

According to Persian folklore, Rose Quartz (like all types of Quartz) will help babies with the intake of mother’s milk. Folklore also tells us that Rose Quartz can be used with newborn babies to help in their transition from the spiritual realm to the material world.

UNAKITE: Scorpio (October 24 - November 22)

Unakite is an opaque stone in shades of green and pink. It is associated with understanding, balancing, and personal growth. It aids emotional and spiritual growth, stimulates perception, and cleanses repressed emotions.

Folklore also tells us that wearing it can help with fertility, pregnancy, and the healthy development of a baby in the womb, so this could be a great stone for an expecting mom.

LAPIS LAZULI: Sagittarius (November 23 - December 22)

Lapis Lazuli is an opaque blue stone with some veins of white and flecks of gold. It is associated with insight, spirituality, and wisdom. It enhances intuition, promotes peace, aids creativity, and increases awareness.

SNOWFLAKE OBSIDIAN: Capricorn (December 23- January 20)

Snowflake Obsidian is an opaque black stone with grey “snowflake” patterns. It is associated with understanding, serenity, and protection. It absorbs negativity and provides balance in times of change.

RAINBOW FLUORITE: Aquarius (January 21 - February 19)

Rainbow Fluorite is a transparent stone with primary shades of purple, white, and occasional green. It is associated with protection, healing, and rejuvination. It diminishes stress, heightens intuition, clears and sharpens the mind, and helps to release negative patterns.

AMETHYST: Pisces (February 20 - March 20)

Amethyst is a type of Quartz. It is transparent, with varying shades of purple and occasional veins of white. It is associated with purity and piety. It protects, helps clear the mind, and promotes strength and stability.

Baby Friendly Beads are designed to keep baby happy at the breast, but each necklace is also crafted with mom in mind. Baby can hold the pendant or slide the beads on the necklace cord itself. Since both necklace and pendant are made from one continuous length of cord, there's no chance of one part breaking off from the other. These necklaces are sturdy: I do not use any findings or clasps, because they are often the weakest part of a necklace, and each is secured with a double knot in the back. (If your necklace breaks during the first year of use, assuming normal wear and tear, I will restring your beads for free!) They are long enough for mom to put on over her head and for baby to comfortably play with while nursing, but they can easily be shortened all the way to choker length simply by sliding the adjustable bead at the back.

Nursing necklaces are also great for entertaining bottle fed babies! Makes an excellent gift for grandmas, caregivers, or baby showers.

Please note: nursing necklaces and bracelets should never, ever be used as teethers or toys. Though all my jewelry is designed with a baby's safety in mind, cords are a strangulation hazard and beads are a choking risk.
