...where the Squares and Circles came from and what they are about...

A little more than Four years ago, my wife and I had just completed an Art Studio in our backyard in Lawrence, KS. The Studio was made using straw-bales as the walls and covering them with a natural clay based plaster by hand. I had a sculpture that I could work in along-side my wife and two young children. Inspiration was all around and I began setting up to paint again after a two to three year break in which I was making functional pottery and teaching ceramics at a local Arts Center. One night after staying up late playing my guitar and enjoying the Studio, I had a vivid dream where I saw circles inside of squares in a grid-like pattern. The next day I began a series of paintings with squares and circles.

The idea or visualization of squares and circles must have come from a book I was reading that explained the origins of a type of visual expression called Mandalas. More specifically, I was intrigued by the explanation of a stage of the "Great Round" called "Squaring the Circle." The stages of the Great Round are equivalent to the key times in our lives where we experience greater awareness of ourselves within the world and grow from those experiences. What caught my attention in the description of Squaring the Circle is that it is about focusing on the things in my life that I can do to enhance the lives of others and my own. This idea that was described in the book coincided with my view of "living my life on Art's terms." Like adding paint to a blank canvas, I choose the direction for my life... I create my life.

My life is Art and my Art is the expression of my Life.
