Deep Sea Anglerfish

To begin with, this painting was a mistake. That is, I painted it as a contest entry sponsored by a local animal rescue foundation. The rules did not state the type of animal one could paint or draw or whatever, just that the image had to be an animal. I am fascinated and enthralled by deep sea creatures (anglerfish, viper fish, hatchetfish, gulper eels, etc.) and, at the time of the contest, I was tirelessly reading about the angler... I'd reccommend doing the same if you're interested in deep-ocean dwellers.

Anyway, so, I painted one -- an anglerfish -- entered it and it was promptly rejected. The winning works were portraits of cats and dogs and cats and dogs and cats and dogs and dogs. My painting must have been laughable as an entry.

But here it is. I tried to capture the foreboding atmosphere in which this small but utterly terrifying creature lives.

The float frame included is hand-made, painted in thick, black acrylic and sealed with polyurethane.
