Hand Wet Felted Clowning Around Hat

Thus far, I have made all of my hats using the wet felting on a ball method. With this method, loose unspun wool is layered on an inflated ball, then covered with nylon stockings. Very warm soapy water and a lot of patting and bouncing the ball cause the wool to felt, and when the wool has felted sufficiently, the stockings come off and the ball is deflated. The felted wool is removed from the ball, soap rinsed out and then it is tossed or thrown to full the felt. All hat designs are my own, and once the wool is felted, the hats are shaped by my own hands, the brims, rolled or flat, or none at all, or bands and any other shaping or adornment is done completely by me. I do not use hat forms. Every hat is unique in design and shape.

Wool hats are great because wool is a natural insulator, and also water or other liquids will normally lay on top of the wool. If it gets wet, you can simply shake the water off or sponge the water off and then just set it somewhere to dry completely. If your hat gathers any clinging fuzzies or pet hair, etc, just use a lint lifter to spruce it up.

The Clowning Around hat was made on one of my "let's experiment (clowning around)" days. It has a multitude of colors, and includes a variety of yarns, wool and mohair. I gave it just a little flare on the bottom edge, to make sure none of the surface is hidden from view. This hat is also reversible, if you'd like a little less clowning. The reverse side has two tones of green and a touch of merino white.

This hat will fit small to medium size (21.5" to 23"). To measure your head, take a measuring tape and place it around the circumference of the head just above your brow, and slightly above your ears.
