I love this piece! It was inspired by one of my favorite Beatles songs, “Blackbird”, of course! All of the blocks are raw-edge appliquéd and satin-stitched in place. The large bird and the branch are both three-dimensional, and the flying bird is raised slightly as well. I used all kinds of fun goodies on this one, including angelina fibers, wire, tulle, yarn, black jute, hand-set grommets, even painted dryer sheets! Glittery chipboard letters spell out the word “fly”. I printed the definitions of the words “moment”, “arise”, and “blackbird” on some beautiful, sheer, bright pink fabric, and stitched these in place over a few of the blocks. (They are hard to read, almost illegible. Very old and worn looking!) This piece has been free-motion quilted and hand quilted. Raw-edged “feathers” made from different black fabrics hang from the bottom. It’s hard to tell from the pictures, but the top of the piece is angled. It hangs so that the sides and bottom are straight, but the top angles down from left to right. It’s very cute!

This is backed with a piece of muslin that I painted using acrylics, and the word “blackbird” is spray-painted on. I attached a hand-painted rectangular plate with the title and my info. There is a quote written across the bottom, and there is a 3” hanging sleeve. The piece measures approx. 12.5” x 18”, and it is signed.

Some of my photos are “retouched” in Photoshop. I crop, try to lighten them up a bit so that the colors are presented better, and if they are slightly blurred, I correct that, too. I will never post a misleading picture! I do not alter the photos to make the pieces themselves look better, (ex straighter or cleaner), I don’t add things that are not there, or take anything away other than shadows.
