Mud Woman Earth Goddess sculpture
Description
Many cultures around the world have creation stories where man and woman are made from the mud and life is breathed into them. The Shilluks of the Nile region, for example, tell a story in which humankind is fashioned out of clay. In each region of the world in which the creator traveled, he created humans from the materials available, making some white, others red or brown, and the Shilluk black. This life-sized mask is my interpretation of the first clay Goddess. A little rough around the edges with hair made of various natural pieces, and glowing eyes.
The piece is made from sculpted paper mache' that has been sanded, painted, and shellac varnished for a permanent wet-look. Her hair consists of various found natural pieces and some man-made ones. There is a ribbon on the back for hanging on a wall, could also be shadow-box framed or mounted to an interesting piece of wood, I'll let you decide.
