The Phone Call, Seven O'Clock

This painting shows two figures at a desk, with an RID certificate (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc.) on the wall. The woman seated behind the desk is clearly interpreting a phone call, and signing "time," while the deaf man is signing "7." Those of us who were around before the era of TTY relay services, video relay services and the widespread use of instant messages and email, remember going to an interpreter's office to make phone calls. Usually located in deaf service centers, interpreters would have office hours for people to walk in and make the calls they needed.

This photo is slightly warped because it was taken with a wide angle lens in a corridor. The painting is not warped, just the photo.
