Pioneer Spirit, In-Law Problems, St Elizabeth Ann Seton
Description
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton is the first American born person to be canonized as a saint.Born in 1774, two years before the American Revolution, Elizabeth married well and lived a happy life as a New York socialite. When her father in law, Will Seton, died, Elizabeth and her husband were charged with running the family business and taking care her seven brothers and sisters in law. Will Jr. and Elizabeth had five children of their own.
The business floundered and so did Will Jr. In an attempt to save his failing health the family went to Italy. Will died, leaving Elizabeth at age 29 with five children under the age of eight.
The Italian family that helped Elizabeth during this time caused her to lean toward the Catholic church. (Elizabeth was a big old Episcopal.)
On her return to the states Elizabeth spent all her time doing charitable work. When her children were grown she became a nun, founding her own order, The Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph. She founded the first free Catholic school in the United States.
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton is the patron saint of schools, widows, people who buck authority, and people with nasty in-laws.
