Description

This artstone sterling clasp is the centerpiece for the choker necklace of deep blue apatite coins. Between are white biwa pearls, labradorite, and aquamarine.

"Blauw van Vermeer"
Azurite was the most important blue pigment in European painting throughout the middle ages and Renaissance …, despite the more exotic and costly ultramarine having received greater acclaim. Vermeer seems to have used azurite in light grays and mixtures of green where the brilliance of ultramarine would not have been appreciable.

I found this fabulous handmade sterling and “artstone” boxclasp, by an unknown artist, that just asked to be a focal object. Echos of that same shape and deep azure color are found in the wonderful coins of transluscent apatite. Like a classic “egg and dart” motif, between the large coins are center drilled white biwa pearls. Wirewrapped drops of labradorite rondels selected for their bright flash of blue (called shiller), along with apatite, aquamarine and pearls add movement to the theme. Vermeer loved this blue, and so do I. Aren’t your eyes this color?

Artstone is a “plaster-like” cast material, in this case colorwashed with a waterproof pigment. Sterling silver is easy to care for. This necklace will arrive in a beautiful satin-lined pearl folder, with a special tarnish-fighting insert. Full care instructions will be provided.
