About 'Blue Goldstone'

Blue Goldstone is a man-made stone and is made by adding Copper Salts to glass in a furnace. The heat "smelts" the Copper Salts back to Copper which then crystallize in the glass. A blue vegetable dye is added to give the blue colour. The Copper platelets formed this way are suspended in the glass and give it its characteristic glitter. The manufacturing process for goldstone was discovered in seventeenth-century Venice by the Miotti family. Persistent folklore attributes the discovery and secret of goldstone to an unnamed Italian monastic order, giving rise to the alternate names "monk's gold" or "monkstone". Another name, "stellaria", is based on the starry internal reflections. It is also called "sun sitara".
