Oil based-ink and watercolor on heavyweight archival quality paper. Signed and numbered on the back, with a signature on the front as well.Telephone poles are emblematic of an era. Like fence posts designed to keep a species of giants hemmed in. Nowadays, newer neighborhood developments tend to have all the cables buried. You can tell the age of a neighborhood by its trees, and to a lesser degree, by whether or not the cables are visible.
I remember following the cables with my eyes on long car trips. Watching them ebb and flow, up and down, as we drove parallel to them. Even though we were traveling at 60 mph, I remember marveling that the speed of electricity, or connectivity, was much faster than our car.
Sometimes I would count them. Sometimes I would speculate how old a telephone pole was. The new ones were dark and smelled of pitch and tar. The older ones were gray and split from top to bottom. They last a long time in the elements.
