natural edge walnut vase

Description

This wide black walnut vase has a very pleasing shape and an interesting irregular grain pattern. It has a natural edge and looks beautiful from any angle.

The fine-grained black walnut wood came from a very big and very old tree cut down as part of a local road project. The property owner let me have the wood as long as I would just get it out of his yard, so I cut it up and it has been air-drying for more than ten years.

The vase would be appropriate for display as-is or with dry flower arrangements.

This piece was cut and sanded on a wood lathe, then fine-sanded and finished by hand with multiple coats of tung oil. The glossy oil finish will last many years and is easily refreshed with another light coat of tung oil if it ever slightly loses its sheen. Just as with any fine wood furniture, avoid contact with water and other liquids. The bottom of the piece has a small cross and my initials wood-burned into it.
