This traditional craft was favored by early American colonists to ward off the "Evil Eye". Items such as broken glass and bent needles were mixed with protective herbs, placed in glass bottles or jars, and hidden in the wall, floor, or attic.

It is common for people in New England to find things like this when renovating buildings and homes from the colonial era. The general (modern) belief is that it's best to put the items back where they were found, suggesting that the superstitious tendencies are still part of the community.

Our version incorporates broken beads and trimmings from our jewellery bench, pins to impale negative energy, rosemary to return it to the sender, and red jasper to drive the spell.

This charm should be hung in a prominent place, such as a front window, or hidden in a private place, such as a sock drawer.

These are great little gifts and don't require a belief in witchcraft. On the contrary -- the people who settled that area were Puritans, which make the most stringent fundamentalist Christian look like a regular party animal. It's part of our American heritage and can be enjoyed as such. However, the witchy and gothy types also like these, which make them one of those odd things that cross the line from mysterious to historical to cool and back again.
