Porcelain Lace Platter
Description
This special platter was made with a handmade lace and porcelain, and glazed in Toasty Marshmallow with GreenMan sprayed lightly on top. It was fired to cone 10 in a gas kiln.In a process similar to Dresden Lace, vintage lace was soaked in porcelain slip for a week. Then, it was laid on a newly thrown porcelain plate. When the platter was fired, the cotton lace fibers burned away, leaving only the porcelain that it had soaked up. The glaze, applied before the final firing, fills the empty space where the cotton fibers were. The lace has been transformed into highly detailed, and very pretty porcelain.
I enjoy using vintage laces, because I feel it connects me to the women who worked so hard to learn the skill of lace making, then used it to beautify homes for themselves and their families. They were the quiet artists of the hearth.
This plate is food safe, and oven safe, but the pattern is deep and detailed with lots of fine texture, so I recommend it to be hand washed and used mostly for serving dry food (cookies, sandwiches) or display. However, don't let the lace fool you; this platter is durable, and should last several lifetimes.
This platter is 12 inches (31 cm) wide and 1 inches (2.5 cm) deep. It could be displayed on a plate stand.
