Vintage Button Tatted Ornament

I love buttons! I am addicted to those huge assorted button bags at the craft store! Simple buttons make the best base for a delicate tatted border. But now I've found something even better than craft store button assortments: vintage button assortments! This red button came in an assortment of vintage buttons I purchased from Sommersbreezeantique here on etsy!

I took this little button and worked a tatted edging around it in Christmas colored varigated and white threads. The ornament is approximately 2" across and set on a silver-tone jump ring threaded with irridescent ribbon.

This is an original pattern born from experimentation.

Tatting is a method of making lace dating back to the time of Elizabeth I. The look is achieved by tying tiny knots to create rings and chains. This piece was made using the shuttle tatting method.
