MADE TO ORDER Adam's Summer Panama Hat

Adam has been bothering me to make him a hat since I started the whole process a while ago. I thought the project was cursed. I tried and tried. Everything I came up with was absolutely wrong.

You can't fit a square peg into a round hole (unless the square peg is very small, of course), nor can you make a proper man's hat on the wrong block. And wrong blocks were all I had.

My lack of fedora block was something I was really aware of. I tried and tried to get the block on eBay.... but I always lost. Fate just wouldn't let me at the block I needed. Then, early this summer, I found by the slimmest coincidences, a blockmaker that works and lives just 40 minutes from my hometown in southern Minnesota. And for some beautiful reason, his prices are reasonable.

I ordered my block, in a perfect average man's size and the first hat I made on it was for Adam. But even that took a little bit. I was dissatisfied by the straws I had access to. I needed something new and special, and somehow by fate again, fell into my first Panama straw.

I've fallen madly in love with Panamas now. This hat you're looking at -is- my husband's hat. You'll notice that it's worn just a little bit in spots. The pinch at the front is a little bit stronger on the left than the right because of the way he puts it on.

I will make a CUSTOM Panama for you, so that the straw can form to your individual style. This beautiful color seems tanned by the sun. It's not the usual pale white, it's more unusual, and a bit more practical. Doesn't show the dirt as badly. I believe the color is called Sienna.

The edge of the hat has been finished with millinery wire and bound in a matching coffee colored rayon grosgrain ribbon. Every tiny little stitch is made by hand. The hat band matches the wire ribbon, and the finish is a very straightforward masculine tie.
